No they are not. Unemployment benefit is not really for the benefit for recipents but for the rest of society. Without a minimal amount of money crime rates would rise etc.

People barely struggle to live on unemployment benefit and live in dire poverty. The answer is not to cut it but make work more beneficial - which is what I believe Gordon Brown's tax credit system has done (my friend who is a single mother works and receives £60 on top of her salary to meet the cost of childcare etc - making her financially better off working).

Benefits should incentivise people back to work - WHERE THERE IS WORK - because its no good telling people to work when there is none available.

Well I know people who have moved from those parts of the country to find employment and opportunity elsewhere, I wouldn't call those people lazy. I seem to recall in my own personal history, leaving the place I was raised to attend college and moving after graduation to a place where I could start a career. I suppose I could have hung out on the corner with my buddies drinkin 40's but I thought someday I might want to achieve something. Certainly there are contributing factors to chronic poverty, one of the largest is government handouts. It's like crack very hard to give up. Typical cycle of addiction does not end until the addict hits, as they say, rock-bottom. I would have to guess that rock-bottom for the government dependent would be no more government checks and the addicts would have to change their lives. I am also not callous enough to believe that a 40 year factory worker who's factory shut-down can just pick up and move, there should be societal safety nets for those guys, but for people who have never worked for income a day in their lives, that's not a safety net, that's a blankie.

Thats not what they are proposing at all.

They want to target long term unemployed people. The way they see it. 600.000 people have gained work from 2002-2006. Most from Poland etc.

So why can't UK people have got these jobs?

This is a very valid point as I pay alot of money in tax to feed these peoples drug or drink problems.

If they can't work, fair enough, but most wont as it is money for nothing.

I just could not live without working, what would be the point, would be the waste of a life.

no they don't but they need to stop this culture where people want to stay on benefits and start pushing them into being a productive member of society they like to bleet about low paid jobs giving them a few pounds more than state handouts if i was unemployed and had to work for a low wage that gave me £20 more a week i would jump at it as that would be £20 more to provide for my family and i would have a little piece of dignity

Something needs changing ! What the f*ck am i working for !?!

We have been looking at this in my current socilogy degree.....everyone seems to think no, but I say yes!
I am sick of ppl not taking any direction in their lives, not because I am heartless, but becuase there is a myth that somehow they cant do anything to better themselves. Absolute bollo*ks, asain and Indian families who came over here and suffered racism have made a better attempt at life, and now work as doctors etc (sorry but its true!!) while indegenous ppl just bleed the benefits system dry and expect everyone to excuse their laziness. Sorry but I dont buy it.
I couldnt care less if they have their benefits cut, expect for the fact we might see a crime wave as they all turn to "alternatve" methonds of generating income.

They need to make up their mind. On the one hand they are considering handing out drugs to addicts at tax payers expense and on the other hand taking money away from people who are unemployed. Being work shy can be considered a simmilarly fundamental mental condition as propensity for addiction so this is an example of double standards.
