It all depends what you are talking about. If it is in art that is meant to hang on a wall, then yes, probably. It would all depend on the tones of each. You would need to balance the colours to each other. Trying to mix a darker green with a lighter purple would only overwhelm the purple. And vice versa...if you mix a lighter green with a darker purple, you would overwhelm the green.
So the answer to your question should be...Yes, as long as the tones of each are balanced.
