Because they have very little experience with other cultures or people with other habits. And while of course there are plenty of bad experiences too, on the whole, I think that a lot of the 'stories going around' are worse than reality. So if those stories is all you know, you're gonna think pretty bad about everything that's different, and you're probably gonna be afraid of it too. On the other hand, if you live in a larger community, you're gonna find out that it's really not that bad... that the black lady across the street is neither poor nor stupid... that the gothic teenager next door is quite nice & always helps his mom in the yard... that the mexican down the street doesn't drink.... Unfortunately, all those generalizations seem to be easy to believe when you have never experienced otherwise... :(

Something of a generalisation, but I think it's because it is very easy to observe others in small communities. Then some people like to get together, compare notes and pass judgement.

People in small towns also don't like being reminded that there is a big world out there, It reminds then that they are missing something. Their eyes glaze over, they don't want to know.

Whereas in a big city you are anonymous.

That depends on the community. Some do, and some don't. I'm originally from a rural area and not that way at all.

Generally though, the recent shift to rural and suburban areas of people who prefer not to associate with others unlike them may have more to do with it.

Not all, have this issue. I live in a very small rural community. I think everywhere has small minded individuals. However, you notice it less in a major urban setting. God bless****

that's a very small minded question! In my small community we don't have small minded people; perhaps generalising to all small communities is actually creating a small mind yourself.

I don't know that they do but I do know that they are more prone to suspicion in smaller commnunities if this is what you mean.

They spend thier lives in the same village and with the same people making it hard for them to grow and trust *outsiders*.

It is not really small mindedness though, just seclusion.

I would have thought would have been obvious. They dont get many visitors and they all know eachother. Pretty simple really!
But weather you are open minded depends on more than your geography, and its pretty narrow minded to ask the question in the first place.......just a teeny tiny stereotype going on there.

you yourself answered your own question. it has to do with their magnitude i.e. SMALL. :-) give them a margin of error as their mindscape is not beyond their own "small" and little world and instead of looking as something bad, try to look at the special and sweet side of it being unique worldwide. and NEVER try to force any changes in their small world.

The answer is with those who ask such small minded questions

Because that is their sphere of knowledge. You can not expect them to go outside that sphere when they know nothing about it. Can you converse on things that you know nothing about?? Just life.
