I know this guy and because he's friends with my sister I know that he can really open up and talk... But whenever I try to talk to him he seems hesistant. I don't want to have deep emotional talks, but I'm not a big fan of small chat either...

What sort of things could I say to open him up a bit?

merry christmas!

Work with him on something (even something simple like learning to skate or watching a movie and giving comments). If you don't want to get too deep don't ask for too many opinions but do express your own and wait for him to comment. This works particularly well the activity if is something he is either very talented in or interested in as he will either give many answers or ask many questions that reveal a lot about his personallity that go far beyond the scope of the activity (yeah, I know, I'm talking in a REALLY OVERLY SERIOUS tone: grad school has a bad habit of doing that to students :-P)

But hey, best luck and it's nice to see someone doing something genuine in the world not just making money and having small talk :-)

When girls start "talking" about deep things, the guy always ends up to be wrong and/or being the accused. A smart strategy for man is to avoid those type of discussions. Actions count, talk is cheap.
Be good be nice

Men are programmed to be tough, and not show emotion.
That doesn't mean they don't have any emotion.
Many want communication, but destroy it
by criticizing. Why did you say that? Why did you look like that? Why this? Why that?
That will make somebody clam up.
Plus, we can't always trust people. Things we say in confidence, many will turn right around and tell to everyone. We have to earn some trust first.

You're probably barking up the wrong tree. You don't want to get heavy with him, but you don't want to chit chat either? Yep, you're barking up the wrong tree. Wait for him to open up to you, or you can ask him if he's more vocal during sex...

Merry Christmas to you too!

Girllll, just ask him about himself! Such as his achievements with work, school, hobbies, talents what angers him, even his favorite meal...especially food and drinks. It may take a few but soon he'll talk your damn ear off and you'll be rolling your eyes looking for the closest exit. Unless you find you like him.

Best thing would be to talk about some thing which he likes. Ask ur sister about it. Then u can make him talk. But if he is quite by nature then u cant make him talk. I think it it would be better to talk about ur sister with him.. that may do the trick.

You could use this as a great opening line, "I'm so stupid I post straight dating questions under the heading Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgendered. Wouldn't I be a great mother to your children?"

Bet that'll make him talk.
