What precautions should one take while on a vacation in Kashmir? Which are the safe areas to stay?

KASHMIR, as the name tells it remind us the militants present there. You should always be with a police patrolling team and should not wander anywhwere tround.

See friend,there is lots of violence in Kashmir with gun battles taking place between the security forces and the terrorists at some place or the other more or less everyday or the terrorists shooting someone they don't like say an informant etc.Sometimes innocents/civilians too get caught in the crossfire.However the state of Kashmir occupies a large area and it is not as if that such violence is taking place everywhere all the time.As an estimate i would say that the chances of an unconcerned person getting caught in the crossfire at any point of time are 5 percent.I may further add here that the local ppl welcome tourists as a source of livelihood and this definitely means some kind of protection.But this may not be applicable to American tourists since Islamic terrorists have a particular dislike for America.

Kashmir is indeed a heaven on earth. I visited there this march.
I tell you that it is the most beautiful place in india. I dont think we need to take any special precautions in Kashmir. The people there are very friendly & helpful. I visited Srinagar, Sonmarg, Gulmarg, Pahalgam, & found out that it was pretty safe. The only place i feel is very sensitive is the Lal Chowk in Srinagar. Hope You got the answer.

Vacation in the Kashmir?

You are in deed a brave soul.

It is beautiful there I admit (I was there delivering aid and medical supplies this time last year....) however it is also dangerous for certain ethnic groups and denominations of faiths..

Just be very careful where you go, being American (and quite stupid) I found myself at one point less than 1km away from 7 Al Qaeda training camps.
