It sounds like it is running on 7 cyls sometimes,even when it seems like its hitting on all 8 its lacking power like its out of time.Ive replaced plugs, cap, rotor, coil (wires are next).Diagnostic code says something about the EGR but it seems to be working.What do you think?

The EGR valve can cause it to run rough. Also, check the low voltage connector going to the coil in the cap. My truck was running rough then wouldn't even start. People were telling me I needed a new dist, brain box, etc. Here, there was corrosion on the coil wire. 2 min of sanding and the beast started right up and with much more power then before. It was like a whole new truck.

check the EGR valve but it sounds like it could be a vacume line to the egr valve look for cracks and it might be just a bad egr vavle

the reluctor on dist shaft can slip and cause problems like you have. To ck egr for problem just be sure its closed all the way shut, and not stuck.
