In my personal opinion, a combination of both a anti spy ware program, ideally Spy-bot, and your anti virus software usually does the trick. Spy-bot Search and Destroy is free and your free anti virus software is either grisoft AVG or avast!. I personally recommend avast! as it is very easy to use. Also I find that the avast! user functions are less restrictive than AVG.
One final thing, though this is tedious but if you do a spy-bot scan after every time you use the Internet the effects of the spy/Mal ware is minimised. Scan the hard drive with Spy- bot S&D eery day and do an anti virus scan every 3 days to weed out all the trojans.

I don't know what other people will recommend but i honestly think Panda Antivirus is the best possible option against viruses and especially spyware. You can get it free from their web page and you dont have to pay... you even have a 30 day full version with activation code and username. It does require a good PC though.

Download a free trial of SuperAntispyware, it works well.

http://www.superantispyware.com/downloadfile.html?productid=SUPERANTISPYWAREFREE
Load Superantispyware and click the "check for updates" button.
Once the update is finished, close SuperAntispyware again, we'll perform the scan later in safe mode

* Start Superantispyware.
Click the "scan your computer" button.
Check "Perform Complete Scan" and then next.
Superantispyware will now scan your computer and when its finished it will list all the infections it has found.
Make sure that they all have a check next to them and press next.
Click finish and you will be taken back to the main interface.
Click "Preferences" and then click the "statistics/logs" tab. Click the dated log and press view log and a text file will appear.

For your Anti-Adware and Anti-Spyware needs...............

Pick and choose at least 2 anti-spywares from the list below and alternate scanning with them on a regular basis. New spywares are created literally hourly, so no single anti-spyware can really detect all malware. Have at least 2 on hand and alternate scanning with each every few days or so. All are free. All can remove as well as detect.
