If you want a big washer and dryer that will do a great job cleaning, I suggest you look into purchasing a front load set. If you are washing 6-8 loads per week, you can save up to $150 per year by using energy and water efficient machines. On average, a front load washer uses about 15-25 gallons of water per load vs 45 with a standard top load washer.

Kenmore and Whirlpool carry top-rated models that I've sold with a lot of positive feedback. The HE5t, HE4 and HE2plus are the best Kenmore models. Whirlpool features the DuetHT and the Duet Sport.

If the washer is going on a second story, you may want to consider purchasing a top load washer that is also energy and water efficient. The Kenmore Oasis is a top rated washing machine with a 4.5 cu ft capacity (largest available). The matching dryer is the fastest on the market.

When purchasing, be sure to inquire with the salesperson about any rebates or tax credits from the government or utility companies. You may be able to get an additional discount off of the washer just for buying a machine that is energy and water conservative.

I have 3 and I love the Whirpool Duet. They are front loading, hold a ton of laundry, and on bot the washer and drier tell you how much time you have left on the current cycle. I have had them a year with no problems. They are a bit expensive, but I got a deal on the floor models in the store. I have other friends with large families and they all have this same thing. There are things to splurge on, and this is the item!

I have a whirlpool duet washer and dryer. They are great!! Costly, but I can get all my laundry done in half the time that it took for a regular washer/dryer. They sell them at appliance stores and some home improvement stores like Lowes. If you get one, you'll love it!!!

The new front loading Kenmores are supposed to be great. My sisters both have them and they love them. My sister-in-law has the Whirlpool and she says the dryer takes a LONG time to dry a load of clothes. These machines are expensive, but you save money in water, energy and detergent. Good Luck.
