Oh yes, and I make sure I inflict this tradition on my children too, along with some nuts and chocolate coins. My dad also used to put a lump of coal in my stocking, which sometimes made black marks on the sheets. Not as daft as it may appear, when you consider the tradition about it being good luck to carry a piece of coal at Hogmanay (but he was from deepest Wiltshire, so no idea where that came from).

It's a throwback from the days when an orange was a treat, and not such a bad thing to remind children about. I use the little satsumas or clementines, and the gorgeous smell means Christmas to me.

Yes, my grandmother always put in an orange. She grew up in Pennsylvania during the depression. In those days fruit was shipped around the world as readily as it is today. So her parents would put an orange in her stocking because it was considered an exotic treat. Since then it has become somewhat of a tradition even though oranges are no longer expensive or exotic. But this tradition probably dates back even further than the depression era.

Yes, and an apple and chocolate money. And half a crown (=12 1/2 p these days) And a few nuts. Possibly a new pencil too. The 'big' pressies were always downstairs. I did the same for my kids until they were well into their teens. They especially liked the year I'd watched the young ones and they got wrapped sprouts in the stockings as well!

I hung up my stocking for Father Christmas and was always amazed because I got things that I asked for. The stocking always had an orange in it, a few sweets and other inexpensive odds and ends. It always took me 5 minutes to unload the stocking and the first thing I did was to eat the orange and the sweets. Larger items were left in the fireplace. On one occasion I had a banana which none of my friends had ever seen before as fruit of all types was in very short supply. I saved it to show them and I share this one little banana between 4 of us. Frugal Christmases but for all that never forgotten. We even had snow at times.
Happy Christmas to you and yours.

Yes, every year since I can remember we would receive a orange in our stocking, and were very happy to get it. This is a long time tradition in our family, which we still do every Christmas. Best Wishes and Merry Christmas.

I still do! I got an orange in my stocking and an apple by my bedside table. The apple was how we knew Santa had been to our house or not. It was a pretty ingenious way of keeping curious kids in their beds until morning. I am definitely going to carry on that tradition with my kids.
