First of all, I wanted to say congratulations! During the 38th week of pregnancy, you will feel slightly more and more uncomfortable as time goes on. The baby may start to drop into your pelvis to prepare for labor. You are considered full term and may go into labor at any time.
My suggestion would be to make out a birth plan. You can google birth plan and see what kinds of things should be on your birth plan. But always remember that labor and delivery may not go as you had planned. Be open and willing to change what is in your birth plan during labor and delivery. You may put in your birth plan that you would like to have an epidural or use other kinds of drugs to help ease the pain. Never bring any of your own pain medication into the hospital (This is a given, but a lot of people don't know it). Talk to your doctor about pain relief while in labor and delivery. I was given Nubain, which is a non-narcotic pain killer and helped me out tons. Then, I had an epidural, which killed the pain almost completely. I was still able to feel when I was contracting, but I couldn't feel the pain and pressure from it.
You should read about different birth plans and different medications to help you through L&D. Be open and remember that not every birth is exactly alike. During labor, if you don't get an epidural because of time contraints or other issues, don't fret. Your labor and delivery will turn out just fine.....exactly as it is suppose to turn out. Good luck!

You will have to decide early if you want the epidural and stick to the decision. They will administer it by putting a large needle in your spine, but they will give you a shot first so you shouldn't feel it but you will have to stay very still, so between contractions. I highly recommend it, though if you want to go to the toilet first because after you have it you won't feel much below the waist. The numbness can complicate you knowing when to push or even that you are pushing. If you can get by without it definately go for the oxygen machine and get someone not hysterical to hang on to. Good Luck hope all goes well

during this period i was ready to get rid of it, the weight etc. with my 2nd though i never wanted it to end because i was worried if i would cope (11mths apart). With an epidural they mointor your contractions and tell you when to push. Beware though my friend had it and they stuffed it up, she ended up in hospital a week later with problems and the wouldnt let her take her baby in to look after (australia). My 1st pregnancy gas was plenty enough, and shower the warmth is great! with the 2nd though i sang out for it and wasnt given it, they kept delaying it and then said its too late now it wont kick in, but overall i think i was better off within it
