I liked Dalton, he had a good Shakespearean trained voice and brought an intensity to the role that you sort of missed with the others.
His Bond is a lot like Craig's, what you expect if you actually think about what the man does for a living. Actually I felt Craig did it with even less heart and nailed 'callous'.
Connery and the others did a good job of bringing out the charismatic side to such personalities but tended to let his nastier side down.
It's really a matter of what you want out of Bond rather than necessarily being true to the character. After Craig we may go back to a more humorous feminine Bond, and/or one with more gadgets. Maybe eventually the franchise will tie this up by making Bond a role rather than an individual. It's fun to see them come and go and compare them.
I suppose to answer the question, for him, typecasting, for them probably too intense, maybe he asked for too much dosh.

He was never wanted as Bond even when he actually got the role (although he had been wanted many years earlier). Pierce Brosnan was the man they wanted at the time and was offered The Living Daylights but he couldn't do it because of legal / contractual commitments with Remington Steel - he couldn't take the role until Goldeneye. Brosnan did have a pre-contract which even stated for example that he couldn't wear a tuxedo in anything else he did! There was also quite a gap between the last Dalton film (License to Kill, 1989) and Goldeneye (1995) because of legal squabbles over the ownership of James Bond, disappointing box office results on Licence to Kill and the death of longtime screenwriter Richard Maibaum which all delayed the start of production for several years. Although he was actually legally contracted to play Bond a third time, after several years elapsed with no new film Timothy Dalton announced he didn't want to play the role again and the producers were more than happy to let him go and take on Brosnan. In terms of which Bond was closest to the Ian Fleming character, I would personally say as someone who has read all the original books that only George Lazenby (who was Bond once only in On Her Majestys Secret Service) and Daniel Craig (from the new version of Casino Royale) are anything like the original character.

To the best of my knowledge, only two bonds have given up the role, Connery (he'd had enough) and Lazenby (he didn't want to get typecast... so THAT worked).

Apparently, he wanted to concentrate on managing his solar powered flour refinery, The Seiving Daylights.
