It depends on the language you want to translate. Babelfish is fine for short sentences, but doublecheck your translation with a human translator for anything important like a tattoo or engraved rings and stuff like that. If you have ever read a document translated from a foreign language by Google translator, you'll know that the English can often sound very strange indeed - so that is likely to happen with these machine translation services.

For translations into Irish Gaelic, you can get free human translations at the site below - and they are such a friendly bunch too.

For short phrases, try the website http://www.proz.com. It employs a system very similar to Yahoo Answers, so translation professionals answer questions for free in return for 'kudos points' if they provide the best answer.

This is better than automated software sites, because you get a human native speaker giving you a precise response, instead of the sometimes hit & miss nature of places like babelfish and freetranslation.

The range of languages the translators can work with is immense.

it is a free & easy site to use. It also translate from English to:

French
Spanish
Norweign
Russian
Italian
German
Dutch
Portugese
simple Chinese
traditional Chinese
and Japanese

it also translates all of those languages to English so if you send a letter to a penpal is Japan you can type it up and then copy it down.

Be careful though. If you translate something from English into another language, translate it back, just to see if the meaning remains the same.

there are 3 I use for quick translation
babel fish which is the fastest
worldloingo which is more accurate but slower
and reverso which is very good but is free for short documents and phrases.
In general theyre useful for translating to your own language but they can have strange results.
a fun test is to translate from one language, them translate it back!

english to french
"a fun test is to translate from one language, them translate it back!"
becomes
"un essai d'amusement doit traduire d'une langue, ils la traduisent en arrière !"
back to english becomes
"a test of recreation must translate of a language, they translate it behind!"

There are various dictionnaries web sites... yet translating a turkish sentence is in simple terms too complicated for the present softwares and programmed machines, by using fact the grammatical style of the turkish sentences creates "composed words" ( with multi-addition of prefixs)... i know it is not ordinary, yet i could in simple terms supply you the suggestion of commencing up the educational of the turkish language...

there's pleanty like world.altavista.com but i wouldn't rely on them completely. I once used babelfish to translate a letter to my french penpal and she never wrote back, my cousin translated what i had sent to her and i had practically proposed...??? no wonder she never wrote back, i only wanted to write "love from"
