In the 9th millenium BCE.
The earliest known civilizations (as defined in the traditional sense) developed from proto-civilized cultures in Mesopotamia between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers in modern-day Iraq, Persia in modern-day Iran, the Indus Valley region of modern-day Pakistan and North India, the Nile valley of Egypt, and the parallel development of Chinese civilizations in the Huang He River (Yellow River) and Yangtze River valleys of China, while smaller civilizations arose in Elam in modern-day Iran, and on the island of Crete in the Aegean Sea, as well as the Olmec civilization and the Caral civilization in modern day Mexico and Peru.

"Civilization"- a derivative of the original Roman word 'Civitae' or 'City dweller'.
If this is the criteria for 'modern' then the earliest city was in Babylon, about 50 miles south of Baghdad in ancient Mesopotamia. This city was the 'Holy City' of the Babylonian empire from 2300 B.C.E. and contained one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. The Hebrews were incarcerated here for a time and some of the Torah reflects that influence (the story of Noah was written while the Israelites were enslaved in Babylon).

Hello dear!
Well, the meaning of the word civilization is the gathering of people forming and living in cities.
In this respect, we have "lake cities", in Greece, dating more than 10,000 years ago and surviving for several millenia.
Also, we have fortified cities in some Greek islands dated some 6-7,000 years ago.
Of course this is according to archaeological findings.
According to writings, like of Plato and Egyptians, there were mighty cities, including Atlantis and Athens more than 13,000 years ago, since 12,500 years ago they had a great class between them, and the Athenians wan, giving freedom to all people in Europe, Asia and Africa asking nothing in return!
The civilization, in this respect finished with the unification in one kingdom of most Greek city-states under Philip and Alexandre, about 23.5 centuries ago.

I'd say it began when the first cave person threw an insult instead of a rock, because it was then that people realized that violence wasn't always the answer.
Have we really progressed all that much? I suppose not, or there wouldn't be all the violence that there is in the world, but then I fear I don't have much faith in the perfectibility of humans.

the word 'civilisation' as in ppl forming a colony and living together has many ans here. but if u are talking abt the very exisitence of humans, i mean from apes they once showed on national geograpic where humans first evolved. it was an AM-MAZING program. i forgot the date.an eye opener. see if you can get your hands on it. forgot the name of the program. they showed with diagrams and DNA tests. it all started in africa. ppl from africa evolved into humans from apes and survived and learned new skills etc. from here some travelled to suitable climatic conditions via sea and reached south india and australia. and they actually matched the DNA of the oldest african tribe and found his link with some jungle tribal in south india and with an aborginie from down under. from here the south india tribe moved upwards towards iran etc the other tribe moved mongolia and china.(again proof of DNA tests). then russia. and russia being extremely cold going down to -50 deg it was too difficult to survive. there was particular time in one of the centuries when ice melted for a brief period in summer. so one group left moved north and that's how they reached europe and US finally and formed a settlements here. and interestingly how the features and color and physical growth and food and hobbies and activities change from region to region to adept to the environment. and one more fact that comes out of the whole thing is that we are all born out of black( the africans) so if the europeans and americans have anything to thank, they shud be thanking the africans to give them their very existence!

Probably when the first cave paintings were created. It was the human race's first attempt at art, and communicating a story. That, and fire, definitely separated us from the animals.
