Can teachers hold you back after school "Legally"

For no longer then 10mins on the same day you have to give 24hrs notice and inform parents for any longer legally

It's not done on the same day for the reasons Chel1525 listed. They have to give your parents a certain amount of notice beforehand so that they can make arrangements and whatnot. Usually done with a paper and a parent signature.

If that notice is given, it's legal.

You do not HAVE to stay after school. However the school subsequently does not have to allow you to graduate if you have detentions that are not served.

Yeah, of course they can, it's called detention. Ok, maybe not legally.

School districts have lawyers on staff or retainer who vet every district policy for legality, including this one, so yes, they can, if your school district has a policy that says they can.

Yes they can, but tthey will have to inform your parents, so that they know you will be late home.
