There is a couple of different ways to do it.
1. Darwin to Mt Isa 1700kms
Mt Isa to cairns 1400 kms (Back roads)
or
Mt Isa to Townsville 1000kms
Townsville to Cairns 300kms
- I suggest this is the best way as you have more towns to go through and less chance if something goes wrong there will be other cars taking this route.

I done that journey 10 years ago on the Greyhound bus. It was going to take 40+ hours so I had a stop over in Mount Isa. Got beat up in a backpackers hostel from some biker because I was snoring in the dorm. So my advice is do the journey in one or don't fall asleep if you snore!! Still the best country ever though!!

Its 2885 kilometres from Cairns to Darwin. Depends what you are driving. How fast you want to go, and how quickly you want to get there. How many ks do you think you could do in a day?
