Philosopher- from the Greek 'philo' to love and 'sophia' wisdom.
In ancient times people were expected to "know everything", and Greek Metaphysics was considered to be just as important as anything else.
Many of the old philosophers; Pythagoras, Socrates, Plato, etc were also 'Magicians' (from the Persian 'Magi'; wise men).

I like Spinoza, Plotinus, and Buddha. Along with a dash of Mary Baker Eddy and Emma Hopkins.

Living, I would say Alisdair MacIntyre.
Of any philosopher - it has to be Socrates rather than Plato (who was his pupil after all).

Living? I have no idea, but I would pick Robert Pirsig.
Dead? Plato, hands down. He defined the categories of philosophical thought.

although there has been known attempts in our recorded history, to define some of the elemental parameters of creation models as well as some of the principles of the ideation process, we cannot say, as far as we are concerned, that the mechanism of human thought, as entangled as it is in a world of illusion, has been satisfactorily mapped much less understood or impacted upon by conscious effort

Socrates....
He used the toughest method to teach, and the most reassuring one to learn for the simplest of the simple people around him in those times.... asking correct and sequential questions which evokes 'realization' deepening answers !!!!
