why is it that girls have to say ,i am a gay lesbian ?

help me understand. isn`t saying i am a lesbian enough, we all know a lebian is a women.why not just say i am a lesbian? go figure.
p.s. guys just say i am gay .

I've never heard a woman say that, I am a lesbian; sometimes I say gay, it is obvious if I, a woman, am gay then I am a lesbian. I don't know who you hear say this but I agree it would be redundant.

Perhaps, just in your circle. My pals just say either gay or lesbian. I personally just call myself gay.
