There are two reasons in my view why we are struggling to understand life.
First is the simple one..... namely that it is not possible to know something fully well when we are involved in it and subjectivity clouds our thinking. We are s....o involved in life that it is almost impossible for us to view it in any objective manner.
Second reason is its complexity and inconsistency. In fact these two words define life..... it is the most unimaginably complex thing both physically and otherwise and at the same time, it is so dynamic that inconsistency is the norm. No wonder then we can't understand well enough.
Good question.... thank you.... I hope you agree with my reasoning on the why part of it. By the way have I also partly answered the what .... most complex and inconsistent?

Life is the characteristic state of organisms and individual cells. This is how they thrive. Properties common to the known organisms found on Earth (plants, animals, fungi, protists, archaea and bacteria) are that they are carbon-and-water-based, are cellular with complex organization, undergo metabolism, possess a capacity to grow, respond to stimuli, reproduce and, through natural selection, adapt in succeeding generations.
An entity with the above properties is considered to be an organism. However, not every definition of life considers all of these properties to be essential. For example, the capacity for descent with modification is often taken as the only essential property of life. This definition notably includes viruses, which do not qualify under narrower definitions as they are acellular and do not metabolise. Broader definitions of life may also include theoretical non-carbon-based life and other alternative biology.
Although it cannot be pinpointed exactly, evidence suggests that life on Earth has existed for about 3.7 billion years [1]. Currently the entire Earth contains about 75 billion tons of biomass (life), which lives within various environments within the biosphere.[citation needed]

The basic tools that we are used to for perception keeps coming in the way.... For this alone, the perception level needed is beyond the sensory levels.. logic has to fail to satisfy... a person has to just keep the possibility open and seek from within, using self awareness as the only support, without believing or disbelieving.

Life is a full-time job we all get from the moment we are born, to find love in our families and in others, to strive hard to reach our goals, something we do find happiness and love. Life is a game with winners and losers, and cheaters as well, and obstacles and challenges. But no one really knows what life is or what it's all about, making it harder to find its meaning. The meaning I wrote is my best try.

My opinion on this is........you go to school ,so your not a complete idiot........you find a job, then a wife , you have children, raise them, and the cycle starts over. It may seem simple or boring, but we are here to procreate......and along the way have some fun. We will have some good times we have some bad times....the the good and the bad are to show us how important life is, and how short are visit here really is!!

We are made for wondering...it's our nature, so If there wouldn't be any questions to ask we probably wouldn't exist any more.
Also i think life would be very boring if we knew what it really is.So do not forget to have some fun in this "unknown".
PS: We'll probably get this answer when we die :)

I think if we knew why we were here, we might find that being here is just a choice. (;
