I've been all over Europe and I found a real gem this year - Kracow in Poland. It is fabulous - great architecture, an unbeleivable square, great restaurants, bars, shops, people; everything you want in fact. It's a very historic place, incredibly cheap (for example, we had a three course meal in a Gordon Ramsey style restuarant in the basement of a 14th century building, very opulent, and the bill only came to £28 and that was with a big tip). We stayed at a fantastic hotel right on the old town square (which is the largest and oldest square in Europe)called The Wentzl and it was a 14th century building also, superb rooms, service and restuarant. That was only £86 a night, I couldn't beleive it (details below for the hotel). Flights there on Easyjet from Liverpool were about £70 each. I was really really impressed with the place to the extent that I may buy an apartment out there. Trust me - you should try it. It's also close to Aushwitz Birkenau which I think everyone should visit to pay their respects, although it's very harsh and emotional, that was an unbeleivable day and I was glad I went there.

I would have to say Rome would top my list. So much to see and do and the food is fantastic. With most Low Cost airlines operating in and out of Rome, flights can be pretty cheap and you can find hotels for all budgets.
Then theres Paris,Prague,Amsterdam (always good if you are on a budget) and some lovely German cities like Hamburg (with its racy nightlife) and Berlin. The list is endless...

I would definitely say Brussels, Belgium, just before Christmas. Just back from our 3rd year in a row! Its very Christmassy, really romantic and interesting place to go, with loads of great bars, restaurants and places to see. Just trying out all the chocolate and beer is a good enough excuse to go!

I went to Budapest recently. It is great to have a city with two halves- modern and historic. It actually makes it really quick to plan your weekend! I would say for a balance of culture, wine, food, shopping and fun/pubs, it is a great place. You also have a the zoo and spas.

Prague is beautiful and quite cheap, avoid the stag dos though. Otherwise Barcelona has plenty to keep you occupied. I love Paris too, you'd never get bored there... so many cities, so little time.
