I hate to say it, but it is our society. We have gotten so permissive that we do not "lead" or "direct" anymore. We are a nation of parents that watch our kids as they follow destruction. We are so busy trying to be good parents that we don't know how to love them the right way. When they are unhappy, we fill them with McDonald's because it is the trendy fast food and it gives them comfrot. We don't make them take responsibility for anything because we're so afraid they might run away from home or try to commit suicide. Then, it would all be blamed on us - that we were too hard on them.
Look at the second link. I typed in "lazy kids" and this article came up. We have excuses for kids being lazy! Everytime you turn around, a new disease or disposition is named in that honor! It's ridiculous. Like you, our future is not promising with these guys coming into age. Don't get me started on the 20-something X'ers!

You are right, but let's key in some factors here. One, you are making generalizations on Amercian families based on TV. TV is not an actualiztion, but a dramatization of what is going on in America. It's true that Americans are getting lazier and fatter, but it is not all our fault. TV has a greater appeal than ever before . I think that the average household has three TVs. There are also fast food and this is because (I'm gulty of this too) it's just there. You can just eat all you want and it's quicker and easier than putting time and effort into making a full course meal. There are video games and COMPUTERS that keep kids indoors for hours and hours and leaves them sitting and doing nothing. Also it has been shown that some vidoe games cause decay of some functions in the brain. Technonlgy has made it possible for it to do things instead of us having to get up and do it ourselves.
I know that this sounds like another person blaming all problems on something else, but that is what it is, and don't worry about the future, everyone is very worried that America will lose some of it's grace and poise that comes from the core of hard-working Americans.

American society as a whole has degraded badly. Gone are the days where one parent works and one stays home to be there for the kids and make sure that they do the right things. Gone are the days where familys sit together, eat together, etc.. American society and worldwide has evolved towards commerce and power. Those that have the most have the control and like to raise the kids they way they want, uncontrolled, killing each other over stupid things like shoes, and other stupid things. Today kids are raised by TV, not getting out there and earning respect like they should. Parents are just not there anymore, and they dont give 2 sh*ts either how there kids are doing. Unsupervised = unruly, disrespectfull, and violence towards anyone else unlucky to get in there paths.

I wish everyone who answered this could get ten points because they are all right. Rich, poor or middle class, it doesn't matter, American kids are turning into mindless mush. The blame lies in a number of things. First - the "old ways" of raising children were terribly abusive. Now the door has swung the other way and we want our kids to have it better than we did. Parents are overcompensating for the crimes of the past. I am guilty of this, since I never spank my kids, because I hate my father for the beatings I endured. Television has done a large part to encourage lack of manners, rebelliiousness and hypersexuality in kids. Disney channel has been banned in my house, along with Nickolodean. Schools and teachers that just don't care, parents that don't care what their kids do in school and MOST of all - the Decline of the nuclear family. I don't care if it's a man and woman, two men or two women, you NEED two adults who see eye to eye on parenting to raise a family.
Complacency killed the family...

Not just you...a lot of American kids do ge fatter and lazier..I dont say all...but a lot indeed....
It always comeback with the parents again..somehow, the mothers have to start cooking healthy food (or buying healthy food), ban the kids from having too much fast food and sweets..and push them to go exercise more. Fathers ...please get out from the couch and do a bit of fun exercise with the kids few times a week. School should also push the students for more sports activities...
It takes all of the family members to work out this problem
:)

Sure, I think you’re correct. Seems not only the kids, but adults too. And yes, Americans are extremely over medicated. The meds are just like every other illegal drug. It pushes the problem to the back ground until it wears off. The problems don’t go away until you address the issues and resolve them. But then again, it goes back to being weak and lazy. Kids and adults would rather sit in front of their computer then go for a walk… ya its sad and getting worse.

I think perhaps you're just as out of touch with the youth of today as your elders likely were when you were a teenager.
The youth possibly is less dynamic and robust as they once were, but it's a trend that automatically occurs when a people no longer need to worry so much about making ends meet, and have time to concentrate on a bit of luxury. If you look anywhere else in the developed world you'll see similar patterns, though car rides may be less prevalent in Olde Europe where petrol is grossly overpriced because of green laws.

Trying to find out about America by watching the TV or reading the news is like trying to predict the score of a baseball game after one inning.
Tv and media are driven by 'point' items. Like every other business, they are partly motivated to provide content that people will want to consume. Thus, the famous anectdote "if it bleeds, it leads" (I don't know who said it, but I know I didnt).
Because TV and media have to provide the news at the same time they turn a profit, the programs and information offered reflect that. Does that mean that is the ENTIRE story? No, not at all. Sure, we lag behind alot of other countries in math and science, but how many famous scientists, mathematicians, physicists do we need to produce to maintain healthy scientific progress? One.
All it takes is one Einstein, one Watson, one Crick, one Newton, one Nash, and everyone advances.
Remember the maxim about the iceberg; 1/7th above water, 6/7th's below? Its understandable to be worried, but there is 6/7th's worth of unknown America that promises something else.

I'm an "Yank" too, it's because they get "Coddled" too much, they get rides to school 2 blocks away in mom's air conditioned S.U.V., and this is in 12th Grade ! They are lazy, and absolutely "brain dead", we used to work our butt's off in H.S. for weekend $, nobody works now, if they do, they have this unpleasant scowl on their faces like they are being punished. They also have absolutely NO SENSE OF HUMOR, crack a joke at a kid now, and you just get this dumb look with an open mouth back at you, kids used to be funny, and always goofing around, now they just stand there waiting for the world to lead them around by the hand.
