Is it also dangerous to buy, for example, used socks or swimwear? What preventative measures can one take (chemicals, boiling, a waiting period before wearing it)?

Ummm.. you could get lots of infections that you may not want to get. And you could even get pregnant if they have some sperm residue on them (sperm can live for a few days outside of the body). I would suggest you buy new things, it's not that expensive.

I don`t know the risks involved, its just the thought of wearing personal articles of clothing worn by others that is a turn-off. No matter how much washing is done, the thought of wearing items that were in contact with private body parts is unappealing.

ewwww who wants to wear someone elses underwear... but if ur really that broke and need to purchase someone elses under garments i would highly recommend a high dose of bleach in the washing machine prior to wearing them same with the socks and swim wear... but honestly just the thought of wearing someone elses underwear and bathing suits along with socks is pretty gross i would just save the money and buy them from a first hand store
