Depends on the size and what it is. Here in Australia, we have many deadly spiders. A couple of species can kill you if you get enough poison in your body. But there are only a few types that come into your home.
Red back spider -deadly. Instant Kill first ask questions later.
Huntsman - I usually leave them alone as they are harmless if you leave them alone. They can bite but usually not aggressive and will roam freely up in the ceiling area. I have one right now on the side of a door looking at me while I am typing this answer. They can grow up to about 4-5 inches across tip to tip of the legs.
White tail spider - extremely aggressive but very small. One bite will be painful and wil give you horrible scars from the flesh eating bacteria on their fangs. Kill with extreme prejudice.
Wolf spider - about the same size as a huntsman but more agressive and can or will jump at you and will also bite. Although it is rare you will see one in the house. Kill if yo can catch it - but calling exterminator is a better choice.
I hope you enjoy this little session about life in the Aussie household. Lovely country to visit. Everything we have here can kill you!
Have a nice day

If my cats don't kill it, and it's a small spider, it can stay in the house. A big spider goes outside. I put a glass upside down over the top of it, slide a piece of paper under the glass and take it out to the garden.

Most of the time, I put it on a piece of paper and throw it outside. Otherwise, I kill it. We get hobo spiders (which aparently are worse than black widows?) in our house once in a while, I kill those...but regular spiders I throw outside.

I kinda like spiders, redbacks are the exception, they meet my number 12 boot. On the other hand, I love Huntsmen, would never harm one and forbid anyone in this house doing so. They get escorted outside to my shed and guess what, despite having a horse, we get very few flies....hehe.....but we do have a lot of obese spiders.....

If you want to live and strive, let a spider run alive.
Always put them outside, its unlucky to kill a spider.

Spiders are the cheapest and most sophisticated anti-bug system you can have. They are the smart hunters of the insect world, dreaded by all the bugs. They have evolved over millions of years to catch the dirty flies etc. without moving from on spot. How cool is that.
They also have high standards of personal hygiene.
I say learn to love them, well, the vast majority of them. If it is one of the very rare larger and poisonous ones then all bets are off.

Put it outside. Don't want it in my house, but wouldn't kill it.
