There are two types of buoyancy devices. One is a personal flotation device. It assists you in floating, but if you are unconscious you can easily drown while wearing one because it doesn't keep your head up out of the water. A life jacket is designed so your face will stay out of the water (if the jacket is worn properly) so even if you lose consciousness, you can still breathe. Most people prefer to wear the PFD because it is lighter and less cumbersome, but they are taking a risk when they do.
