Punta Cana, Barcelo Bavaro Beach, went last year, I am going about in Feb.
It is as close as you can get to heaven on earth.
The secret is, pay for the nicer places....it is still cheap relative to the carribean, and worth every penny.
Last year we got a free upgrade and thank God every day for it. This year, we shelled out the extra few hundred for the nicer place without even questioning.
You are treated like royalty while there, you do not leave the resort, the poverty off the resort is eye opening and un real, there is no economy.

I think my country would be a great destination choice for a nice and relaxing vacation, it's beautiful, nice weather, happy and friendly people, and not as bad budget-wise for a trip. In another hand, like any other county, the Dominican Republic has it's bad areas, but I believe if you get a hotel or resort in the nice touristic areas you should be fine. We are a poor country but we are also very loving, hospitable and likable people. Make plans to go and explore the land that Christopher Columbus loved the most out of the whole American continent. Good luck and God bless.
Ah! I almost forgot to mention, WE DO NOT hate Americans or no one for that matter, we treat tourist with respect, and they are welcome to our little island as many times as they want. If we hated you guys, tourism would be the main source of income in my country.

I had a ball when I went earlier this year. We stayed at the paradise resort.
We paid one of the resort employees to take us on a tour of the down town area. The drive was about 1 hour or so, but you really got to see how the natives live. It's very poor there but full of culture and great people.
The beaches are absolutely gorgeous!!!

we dont hate americans!!!! but yes there is alot of poverty just as a lot of money the problem is that poitics have all the money DR makes, the power is bad and sometimes we are out of water and we are a very disorganized country but we are very freindly and we make turists have a great time, it is much cheaper for americans or europeans to come here because the peso is very cheap and when u change dollars to peso you get a lot of money and you find things cheaper, however there are someplaces that are as expensive or even more expensive here than in US.

Its not really bad at all!!! I was just there over the summer. It's beautiful and they absouletly do NOT hate Americans. They love them because we have the money!!! They are very very very very friendly! You'll have a great time. THe airport isn't scary. It's just not the kind of airports you see over here. It's all pretty much outdoors but they have restuarants and stuff there. Dont drink the water and just remember to bargain down atleast 35%.
have fun.

It is truely a poor country, but they don't hate US. The people are very friendly. Crime rates are lower than in US. I love the DR. Just don't leave things like cameras or video cams laying around to be stolen. You get a better vacation for your money than anywhere else in the Caribbean. The country is very tourist friendly, it's their biggest income. Just don't go out in the big cities alone at night.

I've been to DR three times, it is a great place, the people are very friendly. yes, there is a lot of poverty, but people managed to enjoy life anyway. of course foolish people love to tell horror stories, there are probably horror stories to be told about the place that you live in right now, but you live there, don't you?

I have spent over a year off and on in the DR. i have heard of 2 people...that is 2 in my entire time there losing some money to a thief at 4am...that is 4 in the morning on a desereted beach. i wouldn't walk down a deserted beach in the U.S. or Canada at that time.
they love everybody there...Americans included. they are friendly people. and really laid back.
Just go...you'll love it.
