How fix inconsistent internet link that closes + refuses access? Early days yet - stuff will get better + easier, eg wireless unit at 'phone socket to serve all household media: telly in loft, phone in shed, laptop in car, whatever?

Sounds like you're either having a router that's grouchy (you need to adjust some settings) or it's signal isn't strong enough.
Read the manual that came with it, and do some searching on security sites on how to lock down your router. Each one's different.
For example - I have mine encrypted, password protected (in two places - to get in, and to connect) and instructed to refuse any other connection that isn't me (my MAC address)
