Pennies are worth more by the pound than they are worth as pennies. Now they have made a law prohibiting people from melting down pennies and selling the copper. Tough penelty if cought.
Why not just stop making the darn things gecause it is selodom we even need them?

I do tend to agree that the news story about making it ilegal to melt down pennies and nickels might be in error. Again it is very difficult to sort the truth from fiction. Yes it was on Yahoo news.

I need the pennies for my piggy bank. Its a cute little fat pig and says OINK! when I pull its tail. My piggy bank is happy when she has a belly full of pennies, then I roll them up, take them to a bank, and buy candy. I like pennies.

You must be mistaken. No state in history ever made coins worth more as bullion that their facial value (or that stopped real quick when they disappeared from circulation).

To boot, modern coins made from base metal have a lower material to facial value ratio than any other form of currency in history save paper. BTW, modern pence are not copper, but copper plated steel.

You either make a mistake as to the precise composition of pence, or are putting up that question in bad faith.

well to us a penny is hardly worth anything but what about the stock market, or large corporation transaction where that penny is trillions of dollrs because it's such on a large scale. and if they round up or down just multiply that by 5X. in the short run it's costly but the gov't is looking at this in the long run where they can't afford to stop making pennies.

Simple - it's to ensure that shop assitants have something to count at the end of the working day - otherwise they might be able to go home a full half hour earlier and what would happen to the economy then?
