When in doubt shut it down.
Standby goes a bit wonky after a while - sometimes not actually working, not being able to "wake up".
If you're using an old CRT (big, kinda looks like a TV) it uses a lot more power than your computer! Set it to shut off after 10 minutes.
The less time it's on the less wear and tear it has, and the less energy you use.
I don't see a good reason to keep it on except that you might *maybe* want to use it unexpectedly. And with enough RAM the startup of computers is fine anyways.
So, yeah, when you're done for a while... shut down your computer.
*Using the Start menu - not the button on the front!*

Turn it off, long ago this was frowned upon due to excess wear and tear on the hard drive. This is no longer an issue. Hard Drives are much more durable these days. Extended use of "standby" has been known to cause problems such as freezing and loss of wireless connectivity. Bottom line, If you are going to be away for and extended period of time, even 15 minutes, shut it down. Hope this helps :)

If u do not use ur computer for 4/5 hours then its always beter to go for shutdown mode. And even at night when ur not going to use it for long time its better and safe to shutdown ur computer. standby mode is not safe for long time because ur system were in sleeping mode that time and always keep watch on wheather any interruption occur for any of the I/O device or not. So some of the portion of computer's CPU power is always use.

Leave it on. Turning the computer off and on sends a power surge through the circuits, which is not good for them.
