Inevitably, there is a lot of disagreement about the "first" ever hip hop song..but its fair to say that a couple of songs are frequently cited by many people as the "original". These are "Planet Rock" by Afrika Bambaataa & The Soulsonic Force, and "King Tim III (Personality Jock)" by The Fatback Band.

The first hip hop song to break through commercially and become a general hit was "Rapper's Delight" by The Sugarhill Gang.

DJ Kool Herc is often credited as being the guy who first came up with the idea of scratching and mixing one song into another to create a whole different beat and rhythm. He wasn't a rapper, but strictly a DJ. He played at small scale block parties in New York during the late 70s and early 80s..and many local kids loved his sound and picked up on it. In interviews, he has stated that one of his major influences for good backing tracks was the German electo band Kraftwerk, and Afrika Bambaataa has also mentioned them a lot.

As for good modern rappers..well, you gotta decide who you like for yourself, but for me I've always preferred the old skool anyway..less guns, more thought.

I feel the reply is visible: The kind of tune itself isn't very normal. What I imply is, Rock musicians for probably the most facet, are looking to create a "new sound", be innovators, while Rap tune is quite probably 10% one-of-a-kind among any 2 performers. Part of that is inherent within the tune kind; Let's face it, it takes a long time to be trained a musical device to a authentic stage, be trained songwriting talents, well making a song, and many others. Almost anybody can be trained to rap within of a 12 months, so those minimally proficient men are all pronouncing to themselves: "rattling, the ones brothers are making a few severe cash, I can do just what they are doing", and they are proper; they may be able to, and that is what they do; they replica each and every different in virtually each and every manner. The movies replicate that spirit of imitation.

The history of hip hop goes far beyond anything I could explain on this forum. It takes its roots from the soul and funk scene of the james brown era.... it also has roots in the blues (which is a root for a LOT of today's music). The earliest forms started in the mid seventies, and there is no way to pin point exactly what the FIRST rap song was...

check out Gil Scott heron (the revolution will not be televised) and the h2O blues... these were poems put to a beat, and I consider it a pre-cursor to rap...
