Ideally it depends on 3 factors alone:
1. Relating to the character being portrayed
2. Popularity of the movie with the masses
3. Public Sentiment

However since most film awards are sponsored by a movie magazine (like filmfare/screen/stardust etc.) the only important criteria are:
1. The relationship the magazine shares with the actress
2. No. of interviews and prospective earning the magazine can earn thru the actress

However irrespective of the fact whether the movie is a blockbuster or not, if it is a "critically acclaimed" movie, the actress will be treated like a goddess. e.g., if a newbie like Nisha Kothari had acted in "Black", she'd have earned critical acclaim like Rani Mukerjee.

And that's how it works in this industry.

I will support answer given by a fellow: In bollywood only two things are required Big Banner & Popularity, althogh it depends upon acting skills, figure & personality skills.

I have examples of actresses which have worked in a big banner & flopped (e.g. Anjana Zaveri; workded with Akshaye Khanna in Himalayputra) & vice versa also possible.

A top performing actress uses her talent and incomparable virtues of head and heart to fuse 'real life situations' into 'reel life episodes'. Her speech-emotional link is very strong. She can translate directorial indications into the 'depiction orbit'. She is beauty personified and commands substantial socio-political recognition. Her social, communication, and execution skills are on a perennial trial. Awardees generally pass through all such tests with brilliance.

the ability of an actress to make u forget her originality and become the character no matter what the scene , the cpability of the director to sucessfully blend in the actress prowess to milk the best out of her on screen character are the interdependant factors which go into deciding the the best performance, cos a badly directed film will in no case attract any attention even with good acting!

First off, no matter what anyone says, there is often "the political factor". There are many fine & outstanding performances that are never recognized and actors that will never "make it big". Now that that's out there, I would definitely say that whether the piece is comedic, tragic/dramatic, the most important thing is definitely the ability to be in the moment and real. To create the feeling that this is happening now; without contrivance. To be so completely involved in the character that the audience identifies with what they are feeling and the story; so that they say, "I've felt like that." or "I know someone like that." etc.
