We use nicknames so we have a sense of identity. Inmates use nicknames in jail also, but for the purpose of being able to track individuals, they are given a number also.

Inmates are given numbers because they've lost their humanity, their rights, and everything else. In prison they're nothing more than caged animals.
As for nicknames, we do that because its easier to remember... maybe out of respect?
