The Government has announced plans to make huge cuts to the amount of benefits being claimed by the long term unemployed.

There was a certain amount of people in the Poll Tax riots who were long term unemployed, the type who haven't worked for years and have no intention in working. Are they going to kick off over this?

My personal feelings are this is about 10years too late, a large percentage of these people are getting paid for doing nothing when they are capable of work.

There will always be a small percentage who cannot work for various reasons, maybe full time carers for example.
I would and HAVE worked for minimun wage before, i think a lot of these people should be made to give up time working on the enviroment for example, clearing river banks, helping charities, just anything to justify the fact WE, the working of this country are paying for these people.

Don't get me wrong, i'm talking here about long term real hard core here, maybe 5 years or more.

I have strong feelings on this.

1. Close the borders and stop listening to twats who say "we need eastern-european migrant workers to do the jobs that our people don't want to do, like scrubbing toilets in railway stations"

2. Scrap the benefits altogether - some years ago I was made redundant and signed on because "that's the way the system works". Attending a job-centre has got nothing to do with getting someone to help you through that difficult transition period between jobs - it's so they can keep an eye on you. They're more concerned about whether you're committing benefit fraud than anything else. It's demeaning and demoralising. I was once told by a JC "representative" - listen pal, we're paying you - YOU work for ME now (yeah, right, JSA doesn't even cover the cost of a carton of cigarettes - i don't see how ANYONE could live on it).
Scrap benefits, stop importing cheaper people from overseas and THEN we'll find out how many people are prepared to get down on their hands and knees, scrubbing toilets. I lasted a whole three weeks on the dole - they banned me for mouthing-off, so I opened my own business - I'm not Richard Branson, but I'm doing ok. I suppose my point is that govt agencies like JC+ are precisely how the system DOES NOT work.

Sorry, I'm ranting - I will and would welcome exchange of people between countries, and often if you have some immigrants they may be on something like a gap-year between school and uni, that's fine, so will tend to take menial jobs because they're not here (or ours aren't there) to build a career, they're just having a working holiday.
But our piss-poor govt now builds these "transitory" people into the national fiscus - we must stop the rot, people.

Don't beat about the bush, 5 minutes or more is plenty.

In the 30 years since I left school I was on the so called dole for 3 days before I landed my first Job, since then I have never had an unpaid day in my life.

The problem now is that by getting one benefit ( job seekers) the door opens to so many more, council tax benefit, free school meals, to name just two.

Scrap the whole damn system, no benefits to anyone is my immediate gut reaction, but to be realistic there are those that need the support of the system, but it should be in the form they need it and not in cash.

Riots, not a hope, a few will no doubt complain, but let the other 58.5 million non claimants complain louder, it's about time we did

nah I dont think there'll be a riot. I do agree with your opinion as well. I believe that if you are capable of working then you should work not because the working public pay for them, but because it would be better off for the economy overall. They dont get that much anyway but free money is free money and they dont work to get that £50 or whatever it is.

Its about time the government got a little tougher on the right groups of people instead of squeezing as much money out of the hard working public as possible.

nothing will be done and the majority of these people are 3 generation unemployed and experts at milking the system for every penny, you only have to drive along the places where they live and see all the new cars and sat elite dishes on every house and flat, seems like a disease. there is an estate near us and the council had so many unmarried mothers on this estate that they had to turn all the 2 storey houses into 2 flats to accomodate them all. a pram outside every one.................

Every town has them and we all know some of them. They should be made to work. As for riots, all that does is give the police a lot of money to hit them with sticks...second thoughts bring it on!

i fully agree with you on this one. i think it has come far too late. as for rioting there may be a possiblity of that. they have to realise no work no money.

if they can't be bothered to work, i doubt they will be bothered to riot.
