I think in the future they won't be needed. Your car will automatically adjust it's speed so it passes between the traffic going across the junction. This'd be excellent for london where there's a bunch of traffic lights every 5 metres or so.

Probably at some point in the future the lights will 'talk' directly to the cars, to make it less likely of jumping red lights. But I think there will always be the normal red, amber and green lights for the driver to see.

We have L.E.D. traffic lights ,and traffic lights that when turn red, there is a small strobe light that flashes in front of it.
