Prolly because they think you are either a self-styled show off cyclist or a git trying to create the impression.
I think it better to be seen in public in a cycle helmet than to be found dead on a slab because you wrecked and cracked your noggin on a curb.
The yellow shirt, well...at least motorists will be able to better aim at you.

Because they think you look a prat. You are not a prat if you wear a cycle helmet and yellow hi-vis shirt. You're giving other road users, such as motorists, a better chance of seeing you and thus making it possible to steer around you as they pass on your right.
Keep cycling - it makes you fit.

hey,
it depends on where u are living.. i'm irish living in germany and i'll tell u this much, u get laughed at over here if u don't wear a helmet!! and rightly so... u'll be the one laughing if u have an accident and the helmet saves your skull... think of it that way and smirk back at the idiots that are laughing...

If you're cycling, it's fine, no problem - but in work, in a pub, or at funerals is silly, and in bed is just, well....strange!
