For example, I couldn't just start printing and selling Spiderman or Pulp Fiction T-shirts, or make a movie with those characters. But if I decided to do either using Santa Claus could I be in any legal danger, and if so, by who?

There are copyrighted images of Santa Claus such as the ones from the movies or Coca=Cola but if you create your own artwork. it should be ok.
