It depends on the content of the file. If the file has text, then you can right click and choose "Open-With" option. If you are able to see any text editor (If its installed in your machine), choose that. If you don't see any editor, then click on "Choose Program" option. It will show you all the programs which can open that .dat file. You can choose Wordpad or notepad if it contains text and choose Windows-Media Player or Real player if it contains Video.

The .dat extension is one of the most generic in all of computing. Programmers can use them to store any type of data they please, so a .dat can contain text, an image, a video... anything, really. It is up to the programmer to ensure that the .dat file can be understood (opened, etc.) by whatever application for which it's intended, so there is no universal answer to your question.
Do you know what kind of data your .dat file contains? If you are not sure, make multiple copies of it before you start trying to open it with various applications. You could inadvertently corrupt the data otherwise.

.dat files are actually many types internally.
Some .dat files are movie type and some are used by system internals.
Hence the movie files could be opened using Microsoft Media Player itself. To do click file menu, then open then select the file location and file. Click open button to screen the video of that file.

the file extension dat simply means data. It is best to know what application created the file and open it with that. If you want to open it for editing, use Visual Basic.

.dat files can be used for many many different programs... try opening it up in notepad.. if that doesn't work then you can probably only open it with whatever program is used to encrypt it.
