Small govt is Republuspeak for racism.
They sucker in votes from people that think that if the govt is smaller their taxes won't be used for welfare payments to the groups they hate.

For the same reason the Democrats do, because it sounds good to the voters. The democrat politician is not your friend either by any means. While he's sweet talking you with pie in the sky promises and throwing around the term "reform" like a platter of buscuits he too is torquing up your taxes and making more laws to help keep himself and his buddies rich while you foot the bill.

This is actually a very complex question and one of my main beefs with the falsities portrayed about the democratic party.
First let me tell you where that phrase 'smaller gov.' came from. It stemmed out of the late 80s and early 90s when Republicans were on a big roller coaster of deregulation.
You see, democrats want to keep monopolies regulated while Republicans think the opposite. Many of the deregulations have resulted in the exact opposite of what was promised by the Republicans as they debated to pass this legislation. I can remember watching on CSpan many debates concerning deregulating cable, phone companies, etc... and now in the past few years, energy companies.
Everytime they promised deregulation would lower prices... well we see the truth.
Anyways, that is the idea of smaller gov.
In reality, democrats are for smaller government. I am as far left as you can get. Any farther and I will fall off. I believe gov needs to keep its nose out of my business. Let ME DECIDE whether or not I should wear a seatbelt... DONT STOP ME on the highway when I have done nothing to CHECK MY PAPERS (license) like the Nazis did.
