Well I suppose they can burn down too... I mean if someone had a wooden roof and it caught fire, the rest of the house is still going to catch fire and burn til there's nothing left (if there's suitable weather and no-one to put it out...) - but if they do tend to burn in an upward direction, have you thought about the fact that heat rises? It's just natural convection, hot air has more energy and rises... so perhaps the fire near the base of the house heats the wood above it and enables it to catch fire even quicker...

Technically, because fire only burns in an upward direction. Therefore, if the 1st floor (2nd in American English) catches fire the lower floor COULD be saved, provided the fire crews reached the blaze in time, there was no wind to blow the flames about, and the upper storey didn't collapse into the lower
