If this is your primary hard disk where your operating system is installed, you need to do it by booting from your Windows installation CD. It will ask you whether or not you want to format the hard drive, and you should choose yes, and select the NTFS file system. Then you can continue with the reinstallation of Windows and you'll be up and running again in no time.

However, if this is an additional hard drive on your computer, and it is not the hard drive on which you have Windows installed, you can simply go to Start --> Run and type diskmgmt.msc and hit enter. Then just right-click the drive you want to format and choose "Format."

There is no difference when it comes to different motherboards.

Hai,
If you are booting with your CDROM with Win98 cd,
go to your CDROM prompt in DOS and then from there go to your win98 directory (ie) cd win98, from here type format c: and press enter
for eg: if cdrom is e: then
e:\> cd win98 press enter
e:\win98> format c: press enter
it will ask for confirmation press Y
you can also go with options as format c:/q/u/s
Q for Quick format
U for unconditional format
S for System Transfer

if you want to make your hdd bootable you have to go for c:/s
