When one friend moves away, does that always have a negative effect on the friendship? Or can the friendship be enriched because of distance?

It is a make or break thing because when you are away your friends will make new friends and in the process sometimes you lose some of them. The same goes for your own self. However, there are friends who really stay with you despite the odds (and that is if you still consider them your close friends).

I have been travelling to different countries for two years now and been away from my close friends for more than five years. However, everytime I go home they are still the first people I meet and hang around with.

And yes it is enriching because of the different experiences each one of you has had while you were away.

depends on how hard you work to keep in touch. having moved alot, i have friends all over the world. i try to keep the communication channels open with emails and phone calls. i let folks know when i'll be in town and make an effort to meet up with them. it's the same as when we were local just effort in a different sort of way.

the friends that are just circumstancial though, like at the gym or work or where ever, seem to fall off a bit easier because the circumstance that led to the realtionship dosen't exist any more.

yes distance affects a relationship cause you don't know what 's going on, there's less communication, less stuff to talk about, less going out and physical contact less of what you want the most but it can most times open doors for the other friend (depending on the situation- cause i think that on my best friends half it's an opportunity knocking at her door through me but in personal relationships i still can't spot a positive impact on distance relationship)

The saying 'absence makes the heart grow founder' could also work here but sad to say it works both ways. Like the saying' out of port, out of mind'.

Good Luck

Yes.. but not if you put some more effort..
but you must accept the fact that both of you will need to find new friends and not let this affect you..
change happens.. we only need to accept it to make things easier.
