I'm sorry I don't have an exact scientific answer, but I think it has to do with being able to see the depth of the fall, and sensing gravity at the same time. It makes it easy to visualize the fall. Then there's that weird death wish that makes people think "what if I just jumped?"

maybe because we know how terrifying it is to fall, or maybe because the gravity of the earth is different when you're in a certain elevation.

i feel the same way. whenever i look down from the top of a building, it feels like someone tickles my feet.

Mans greatest instinct is self preservation. I believe it is because we look at the distance between us and the ground and instantly know that a fall would be fatal so we tend to back away.
