Completely impossible.
Reinterpretation of the constitution and other legal texts following the civil war have made sure that the US are completely indissoluble, and that once in, no member state can get out.
Only some major civil unrest accompanied by a healthy bout of civil war, plus events leading to the razing of Washington DC and complete loss of faith in any form of federal level authorities could lead to each state resuming autonomy.
Of course, such events would probably put the country back into the 1800s and open the new states to annexion attempts by various greedy entities (Canada and Mexico to begin with), and new alliances and federations are likely to reemerge pretty fast, since individual states are mostly to small and improperly developed to survive as independant countries.

Just have a look at what's going on in Bolivia. That could be the beginning of the split.
Remember that the map of Europe has been reshaped more than once, so it's not something impossible. But, I don't think we'll see it happen.

tecnically it is already, with what is called torts between the states, similar to the uniting of the kingdoms in brittain, as in the united kingdoms, but due to these torts we may freely travel between states and move between states ! working as indipendant societys, but in the common good and interest, and any state may succede from the union upon radification of that states govt, at any time !
