Emo is a short version of emotional. For some reason it has become a fad to be emo (at least it is for those in Jr. High and High School). Often they will dress in punk/goth clothing, dye their hair black, keep their hair in their faces, act depressed, listen to music that has to do with emotional stress.

emo stands for emotive hardcore (a genre of music)
its came about during the 80s branching off from hardcore punk
its basically less violent/trashy, more melodic hardcore punk.

and it really died off in the late 90s, though there still are a few bands today with that emo sound.

and then theres emo as people know it today,
the genre being associated with acoustic guitars, crying vocalits, "emotional" lyrics, though a lot of people consider poppunk bands to be emo, just by the way they dress (ex..MCR, panic at the disco)

then theres the fashion,
the main feature being that long hair swooshed over their face, covering one eye, usually dyed black. tight clothes, all black or vintage clothes..rectangle glasses... wearing a bandana..etc. though theres other terms for this stuff like.. scene, goth, etc

and then the beloved stereotype
which says an emo kid:
cuts their wrist, crys all the time, depressed, writes sad poetry.. the list goes on, pretty much anything thats sad or dark, people consider to be emo.

But the others are true also, because thats what most people know it as.
