There are two types of GRE exams. The "General GRE" is required for most all graduate programs. There are three parts to this exam: math and verbal which are both scored on a 200-800 scale and a writing section which has another scale. The GRE is offered at computer centers and is what they call a Computer Adaptive test. That means if you get a question right, the next question is harder. If you get it wrong, the next question is easier.

The other type is the GRE Subject test. These tests are required for some majors in some subjects like Psychology, Biology, and Math. The better programs tend to require the subject tests if they are available, but note that in many of the humanities/social science fields like Philosophy or Political Science, there is no test. These tests are still paper and pencil based and are offered three times a year, generally November, December, and April.

To start your preparation, get a test book. They usually cost around $20 and a good variety can be ordered through Amazon. If you want several books, look for a lot on Ebay. If you are not getting high enough scores on the practice exams there are live and online courses you can take through Kaplan or The Princeton Review, among others.
