you can go to http://www.streetdirectory.com/travel/
just type in your postal code and the end destination and you can choose whether by bus, MRT or both.
They also have the map of Singapore and many other more functions as well. With that website you can go to almost anywhere in Singapore as well as some other countries.

It is either Hougang, Kovan or Serangoon MRT station because Serangoon North is between these few places where you can interchange at the stations and change to another bus which will take you to the destination.

I thnk Ang Mo Kio station is easier to access, u get a lot of buses along AMK Ave 3 that goes straight to the station.

North-South Line is Ang Mo Kio ...
quite a no. of buses along AMK ave 3 to AMK station.
North-East Line is Hougang or Serangoon

No place in Singapore consider far. I think it is Serangoon Station along the North East Line (NEL) track.
