I have 2 3rd gens, and know these cars very well, hence my s/n being BA4, the 3g chassis code. The only engine that would be worth the trouble of swapping in would be the H22. And of course if you can swap an H-series, you can also use the mounts for an F-series. The only F-series that is useful for power is the F22B, and it's only good for Boost.
The only drop in motor would be the B20A(3,5) and B21A1. Not the CRV B20b/z. The B20a3 is the prelude S or carbed lude. B20a5 is the most common found throughout 88-91. Also in 90 and 91, Honda introduced the "bigger" oil burning B21a1, which I have. The B21 have no secondary runners in the intake manifold. And have FRM sleeves which are stronger, but eat up piston rings.
There is also a JDM accord B20A that doesnt bolt up to our 3g bay.
Our B series share almost no relation to the other B series engines without series modification. We are closer related to the H series engine.
The H22 swap has been done before, but you suffer the lost of P/S or A/C depending on which one you want. Also changing your timing belt results in dropping the engine. The down pipe is very close to ground at stock ride height. So a lowered lude would be out of the question.
Im on a forum called Preludepower.com, and we just had a group buy for H22 mounts for our 3gs. Other than the mounts you need axles/ecu/custom shifting bracket and some extra wiring. Check out the site it is very informative.
As for the tranny swap, I've done this on my 91. You'll need...
5spd tranny w/starter
shift cable linkages
shifter
master cylinder
slave cylinder
lower clutch line
clutch pressure regulator
clutch pedal set
tranny mounts...you would need a rear 5spd tranny mount as the autos dont have one.
shifter cable bracket
clutch, pressure plate, throw out bearing.
flywheel w/flywheel bolts
You dont need a new halfshaft because they're the same
you will also need a new lower radiator hose, they are different lengths. You need to relocate the battery ground wire, and get a new heater core return hose.
I also had to drill through the frame, because the auto tranny mounts differently than the 5spd. It's not a big deal, the location of where you need to drill is right next to the auto holes. You will need 4 grade 8 bolts and nuts.
In order to get the pedals in, you will need to unbolt the steering shaft and drop it down from the dash.
Good luck

first off....its an 89 lude....get rid of it. if not....the b series would be the best bang for the buck.. as of getting body kits, carbon lights...........thats all rice crap and DO NOT put this on your car or your going to be considered a ricer. this crap does nothing but make the car look ugly. leave the outside of the body alone.....only work on the engine an such. as of making it from and auto to a manual...the rear cross member will have to be replaced as well as the pedal assembly. also the shifter hole may have to cut out more in order for it to fit properly
as to someof these dopes that dont know......some of the b20s that came in the 89 ludes were not true b series motors. on these cars THE REAR CROSS MEMBER, AND PEDAL ASSEMBLY ARE THE ONLY THINGS YOU NEED TO REPLACE when doing an auto to stick conversion. stay with a cable clutch transmission or get a cable to hydro conversion kit from hasport. also when doin a motor swap in these cars.....clearence is going to be an issue. The second generation of B20A was found in the 88-91 Prelude. The 88-91 Prelude B20A and B21A blocks are cast so they lay at an 18-degree angle leaning towards the firewall. This was done to please the exterior specifications for the 1988-1991 3rd Generation Prelude due to its ultra-low hoodline which Honda dubs the "engineless design". personally save yourself the trouble and get rid of the car and find something else

Go H22, the B series won't give you much power. Also, the F22 engines might fit. You'll probably have to do a bit of fabbing to swap the transmission, the transmission mounts will more than likely be in different spots.

The B series motors will work.
It just depends on how much time you have and the cash you have to do the work. So basically you dont have to get a b20 series motor.
You can make an auto to manual.
Just make sure you have a parts car to get everything you need from there like pedals, slave cylinders, etc
I sell a few bodykits and accessories.
Just drop me a msg.

Look up "japan parts" They have thousands of 25K mile motors for japanese cars. Japan scraps motors after 25K miles for smog reasons. Ask a mechanic if your engin bends valves when the belt goes, if not, you can replace the belt for around 4or 500 bucks. That car should give you 300K miles. If you are at 150 or so devinately fix it.

Civics and Accords. Others may fit with some work and a lot of
money. Have you ever considered an overseas spoon engine?

Stuff an LS1 in there, lighter than some honda motors and makes more power. Ive seen it done on later years preludes.

B16 B18 H22 would work. depends on your wallet. just search around try searching the net for vendors. as for manual conversion you will need the components of the stick shift car. pedal assembly, shift linkage, etc...
Prelude isnt very poplular why not get another car instead?
