I recently got a hamster about 2 weeks ago and the cage I got has this thing on top called the "petting zone". It is on the very top of the cage, she has to go through this tube thing to get there and it makes it easy for us to pet her and hold her. Anyway, when I set up the cage I only put the bedding on the main part of the cage at the very bottom but over time she has moved a bunch of the bedding up to the "petting zone" and so my question is, after I clean it do I put the bedding in both areas(the bottom of the cage and the petting zone) or do I just put it on the bottom of the cage and let her bring it up to the petting zone again?

Galaxygurl...you sound like you know what you are talking about but she does pee up there...it smells like urine up there and before she moved the bedding up there I used to just wash it out daily. I can't now because of the bedding and that is why I don't know what to do. I'm getting so many different answers I am thinking maybe I should just call a vet and ask, I really don't wanna stress her out in any way but I really need to clean that cage.

this is where they usually want their bed. leave her bed area alone. it doesnt need to be cleaned unless she pees there which they usually don't. just clean the rest of the cage every couple weeks and put fresh bedding down. clean the pee corner every other day or as needed. they get upset when u take away their bed. if u have to, just take whatever part is dirty and leave the rest. this will be less stressful for her.
one of mine pees in a little plastic cloud climber by her bed. i have to take the climber off ever other day & clean it. use baking soda and vinegar. u can try moving some of the pee soaked bedding to a more convenient location in hopes she'll go there, but sometimes they just choose the worst areas. just take the bed out in one piece and put it back after u clean the floor. take away any soaked areas of course. this is the least stressful thing u can do.

Just clean the cage and put her bedding in the bottom of the cage. Hamsters will rearrange the place like they want. She will take it back to the "petting zone" or somewhere else she wants to make a bed. If you put new bedding in the "petting zone" she may move it somewhere else. At any rate, it will keep her busy finding new places and interesting to watch.

You can do it either way. When I had my hamster, Hershey, his cage had the same 'petting zone' area. After realizing that he used the petting zone as a bed, I started to put wood shavings up there for him. Hershey would still move more bedding up there. Sometimes, he would kick some out.
Whatever you do, your baby will be just as busy making her bed just the way she likes it. They're very particular!
If you want to give her a fun treat, tear up some paper towels into fingertip-sized pieces. And scatter them around the cage. It's so much fun to watch them gather them up.

I would probably do the hamster a favor and move the bedding to petting zone because you know that she'll just move it n-e ways. That's what i think so Merry Christmas or Happy Hanukkah or Kwanzaa!!

I used to have a hampster who did a similar thing. I would put his bedding all aroun the bottom of his cage, then he would move some of it up into his tube. the best thing to do is to keep the bedding in the place you always put it, at the bottom of the cage and if your hampster wants to move it then he can.

Just put it into the bottom bit because she will make her bed the way she likes it. Also it will give her something to do.

Put it back up int he petting area, she moved it up there because she wants it up there, they are much like rats, they wont let you decorate their home, they will just change it all the way they like it., after a while you will get to know how she likes things in her home

i would let her move the bedding where she wants to. my hamster used to do this, and if i put the bedding where i wanted, he usually ended up moving it to where he wanted anyway.
