Here is the problem: While it appears to be possible that a straight woman could conceivably be 'just friends' with a straight man in her mind, it is highly unlikely that the man in question isn't in some way inclined to think of having sex with her, even if he's not actually trying for it or dreaming of it, per se. Guys are just way more driven by a sex drive than women, I've noticed.
Having said that, I imagine that if they could both manage to keep their hands off one another, if there wasn't an attraction between them on any sort of sexual level, that in such a case, rare tho it might be, a man and a woman can be 'just friends'.

1. Decide early that he friendship will remain platonic -- in other words, both parties have to accept that fact.
2. When one of the friends has a love interest, the other friend should mind his or her business and not interfere.
3. Have boundaries -- lay down what will and what will not be discussed.

Cross-gender (or cross-sex) platonic friendships are not that rare. Men and women can develop near brother-sister relationships that benefit both friends. Males may have a platonic female buddy to talk to for emotional concerns but may have male friends to do recreational activities with.

If you are going to be "just friends" the fist thing I'd say is don't have sex. The second things I'd say is treat that person as your brother so you're positive no feelings will arise!!!

It varies for everyone. Some say no intimate touching, no hand holding, kissing, hugging, and by all means no sex.

Some say only hugging is allowed. Some say hugging and kissing but no sex.
Some go as far as hugging, kissing and even sex but no emotional attatchment. (granted those are usually called "booty calls")
