Good question, and believe it or not every answer so far is a good answer. That must be a first for Y!A. (Well, almost every one.)
So forget about sex in the city and pornography. They had both been perfected long before Columbus discovered what he thought was India.
I might vote for Frank Lloyd Wright or the talkies among those listed so far, and I gave thumbs up to several others, including Elvis, rock 'n roll, and superheroes, but nobody has even mentioned any number of other possibilities: the Broadway musical, country music (a la Grand Ole Opry), landscape photography (for example, Ansel Adams), newspaper comicstrips (Katzenjammer Kids), animated film (esp. Mickey Mouse, Bugs Bunny, etc.), political cartoons (such as Thomas Nast's, who also invented the visual representation of St. Nicholas/"Santa Claus"), op-art/pop-art, Walt Whitman's free verse, T. S. Eliot's New Criticism, the Beat Generation, levis as a fashion statement, the New Journalism of Tom Wolfe and peers, Dr. Seuss and I-Can-Read books for children, Frederic Olmsted and the Greensward Plan (for Central Park), modern drama (Thornton Wilder's Our Town w/ improvised stage settings--or lack of setting), la chaise and other furniture of the Eames . . . .
OK, if I were doing the assignment, I would go with the Eames. From St. Louis, Charles revolutionized modern design with his wife Ray. With them the simple chair became a work of art, a design for comfort, the beautiful use of modern materials, and affordable furniture for the Common Man (person). If you want a term for their accomplishment, call it "the ethos of functionalism."
"Charles and Ray identified the need for affordable, yet high-quality furniture for the average consumer -- furniture that could serve a variety of uses. For forty years the Eameses experimented with ways to meet this challenge, designing flexibility into their compact storage units and collapsible sofas for the home; seating for stadiums, airports, and schools; and chairs for virtually anywhere. Their chairs were designed for Herman Miller in four materials -- molded plywood, fiberglass-reinforced plastic, bent and welded wire mesh, and cast aluminum. The conceptual backbone of this diverse work was the search for seat and back forms that comfortably support the human body, using three dimensionally shaped surfaces or flexible materials instead of cushioned upholstery. An ethos of functionalism informed all of their furniture designs. 'What works is better than what looks good,' Ray said. 'The looks good can change, but what works, works.'" [1]
"La Chaise was created for the 1948 'International Competition for Low-Cost Furniture Design.' The name 'La Chaise was both a reference to sculptor Gaston Lachaise and a pun on his name [French for 'the chair.'] Vitra AG has produced the chair since 1990." [1]
So choose an art form that interests you, like The Chair, and
Good luck on your project.

Rock and Roll my dear since Elvis Presley came out in the 50's America was changed forever. He had to be shot from the waste up on Ed Sullivan show, his pants were skin tight and he did what they called then the bump and grind. He was the start of the sexual revolution and no one can deny that it is history. Then came all the rest. But he was first.

Talkies. Movies with recorded sound and dialog.
Without recorded dialog and sound movies would never be able to dispense the amount of information they currently do. This is especially true of the old "News reels", documentaries and political dramas. Imagine trying to tell the story of the imprisonment of Japanese-Americans during WWII without dialog.
And these examples have changed, in varying degrees, the way we think, feel and what we know about many things.

what about Hip hop music. Intitially in the 70's through the 80's it was primarily ethnic artists and listeners, (younger too) and caused controversy due to the aggressive nature. It is now cross gendered or all gender and all ages respond to it. It's even inspired it's own style of clothing and dance that has created a billion dollar industry. It's always top of the charts etc.Tell me what you think.

There was an Architect in America whom change the way of living in the world. His name was Frank Lloyd Writgh and he developed an architectural move called Modernism. Right following him Arquitect in Europe such as Le Corbusier, and Gaudi continued extending his style.
Think about this. If weren't because Frank we wouldn't have multi habitational buildings right now. and spaces in your home such garage and living room.

The television. It revolutionized the entire baby boomer population. There was an article about this on MSN about a week ago. TV was edgy then and always did things years before hollywood would even touch it.

My guess? Rock and Roll music. It went from a niche form of music to become one of the dominant forms of music.
