your friend is very wrong.....
Had it not been for the breath of life, there would be no understanding... no reasoning.. no movement... no goals.... no purpose.....
Humanity is certainly capable of understanding......
But, duality is necessary!! Even with God......
The spirit (from man = sperma "the living thing") and the body (from woman = the shell "the empty thing") must meet to become whole.....
without one or the other, there is no life.......
Duality is necessary..... without duality, there is no whole.....
Someone once asked:
what is:
1+1......
I say, it is whole..... 1 is only half of the whole picture.... once the other 1 is present, then the two can be whole.....
Once together, they create a whole life......
Without duality, each is searching for another 1.......
your sister,
Ginger

You shouldn't stop thinking about it..
But your friend is right. We can not grasp non-duality because we are dual beings. Once you see the union of duality, you cease to exist as a dual being (nirvana or whatever you want to call it), and THEN "you" will BE non-duality, not grasp it.

Non duality as in the elimination of the subject-object distinction? Well you wouldn't be able to 'grasp' that, now would you? Or if you mean some kind of mystical enlightenment, that would be a thing to be experienced, not understood, right?

As long as a person does not evolve beyond the level of sensory perception, YES, it is difficult to grasp non duality.

I would like to believe we could overcome the attachment of duality, but I've never met anyone who has. I figure practice makes perfect.

knowledge is a muscle used to grasp concepts in spacial reasoning, and most often when someone tells us we can not do something we often try to prove them wrong especially if they do not give a convincing argument against the possibility. yet, chasing concepts are thought altering, I say chasing because we are often required to leave other thoughts, people, places and things out of the equation and that in itself is enough to stay grounded in some area.

1x1=1x1=1x1=1x1=1 To infinity. Nothing exists but God. "God dwells within you as you".we have union with God in unconditional love within the heart. The only "sin" is seeing duality, losing the "single" eye, seeing oneself as separate from God. All other sin springs from this one. "God dwells within you as you". You have union with God in unconditional love within your heart. As you,The eternal witness, look out through the eyes of mental concepts of duality, unconditional love divides into a mental & emotional kaleidoscope. As sunlight passing through water crystals divides into the colors of the rainbow. we must pass to the level of spiritual awareness whereby we perceive the unity of God in all things. (lest thine eye become single you can not perceive the things of spirit.) For this one needs the blessings of a Saint with the power to baptize in spirit & with fire. There are many on earth NOW.

If you look around, everything is dual. man, woman, day, night; you'd need to disconnect your brain from the usual concepts and then it's done; it's possible: think of God. even when the devil is regarded as His opposite, his "powers" aren't as strong as God's.

nothing can exist unless it's opposite exists also, because there must be balance in everything. You cannot define "good" better than versus "evil" or "shadow" versus "light".
