18 is the legal age of consent for sex, buying cigarettes, and it makes you an independent, meaning you are no longer under the control of your parents. You still have to be 21 to buy alcohol.

Basically, you are now an adult with the right to get married, raise a family, vote, and purchase rifles and shotguns. Not necessarily in that order.
You have to wait until you hit 21 before you can legally purchase cigarettes, alcohol, and handguns.
